RHP champion women in construction

In the run up to International Women’s Day, London housing provider RHP Group has hosted a second Women in Construction event, aimed at creating opportunities for women in the construction industry, supported by Kier Places, Smith & Byford, The Hill Group, Axis, and CLC.

According to recent data, only 6% of people who start a construction apprenticeship in England are women. This highlights the need for initiatives like RHP’s Women in Construction programme which seeks to address the gender gap and provide women with the tools and opportunities to succeed in the sector.

The event featured talks from leading women in the construction industry, practical advice on the skills and qualifications needed, and guidance on career pathways. Attendees also had the chance to network with industry professionals and explore apprenticeship and training opportunities.

The Women in Construction event is part of RHP’s Skills Academy, which connects local residents to employment and training opportunities in construction and beyond. The Academy offers a range of courses designed to equip participants with the skills needed to enter the workforce, including training and qualifications in English language for non-native speakers, Childcare, CV writing and interview skills, and Construction and DIY.

Annemarie Fenlon, Executive Director of Operations at RHP Group, said: “As a values-based organisation, our Skills Academy aims to provide inclusive opportunities for people living in our communities. I’m incredibly proud of this event and the impact it has had on empowering women in the construction industry. By working with our partners, we’re helping to break down barriers and offer women opportunities to take that first step towards a fulfilling career in construction.”

Melanie Herridge, Business Director at Smith & Byford, said: “At Smith & Byford, we’re committed to creating opportunities that empower individuals and open doors to rewarding careers. Supporting women in construction isn’t just about addressing the gender gap—it’s about fostering talent, innovation, and a stronger industry for the future. We’re proud to collaborate with RHP on this initiative, breaking down barriers and helping to create a more inclusive and dynamic workforce”

Last year, RHP’s Skills Academy supported over 100 local people, with 70% securing employment, apprenticeships, or further education as a result of their training. This year, the Academy aims to build on this success, continuing to create pathways to meaningful careers.
